Times New Grocery

Oct 6th, 2008 • Category: buying things

The products in Nanjing are, for the most part, different from the ones in America and Europe. True, Nanjing has large chain stores like Walmart, Carrefour, and CE Mart which stock a wide array of Western products. However, there are some little details which are often missed. Until recently, it was very, very hard to [...]

Favorite Washing Powder

It has to be OMO.

And I try to get the big packs at the hypermarts.
In the picture above, you may also see TIDE. I have tried TIDE and somehow don’t like it. Then I went around interviewing - not persistently, but more as an afterthought - and the Ah Yees will say “OMO!”
That’s 奥妙 [ao4miao4] [...]

UNICLO and ZARA in Nanjing

Sep 4th, 2008 • Category: buying things

Today, while traveling north along Zhonghua Road (中华路), I saw a new shopping complex at the junction with Jiankang Road (健康路).
An orange building, behind which was Holiday Inn.

So what’s big deal? Nothing really.
My teacher was going to Shanghai last weekend and her friend told her, “Hey, go shopping in Shanghai, more things there than here [...]

Nanshida night market

Jul 9th, 2008 • Category: buying things

On the junction of Ninghai Road and Hankou Xi Road, there are vendors lining up along the streets hoping to share some of their goods with you. I kind of liked this one shop opposite McDonald’s. In the end, I bought two rattan shelves from another store. 50rmb each.

The Soldier’s Club

Jul 9th, 2008 • Category: buying things

The Soldier’s Club (军人俱乐部) is another quaint foray into a past now replaced by the buzz of commercial activity. It’s really close to where the Cloth City is.

I came here with some Chinese friends who knew where to get books for the cheap. Slightly cheaper than at Xinhua bookstore, that is.

After that I went to [...]

Jinsheng Wholesale Center

Jul 8th, 2008 • Category: buying things

I used to go all the way to Jinsheng (金盛百货) along Jiangdong North Road (in the Hexi area) just to get stuff on the cheap.

There it is across the road! Two floor packed with everything you will ever need (qualifier: to survive). Indeed, all you need to do is make a list: kitchen ware, pens, [...]

Wholesale Tea Market

Jul 8th, 2008 • Category: buying things

Two years back, a friend of mine visited from the States because he was sourcing Tea in the Jiangsu region. Another Taiwanese friend in the know brought us to a wholesale tea market to take a look.

We took a bus to this place, which is neighbors with the Wholesale Fruit Market close by to Jinsheng [...]

“Three street parallel to Hanzhong Road, behind the Sheraton”
Take a look at the map here:

Up on top, you have Hanzhong Road (Red)
Below that is Shigu Road (Blue)
Below that is Houjiaqiao (Purple)
Below that (not shown on the map) is Tangzijie
On this street and around, you will find used motorbikes, used airconditioners, used bicycles, used whatever else. [...]

Nanjing Tailor

Mar 28th, 2008 • Category: buying things

Here’s the picture of this “Cloth City” in Nanjing.

The easy way out is to first find a tailor. There are a couple of tailors on both the first and second floor. Let him help you find fabric, and make what you need.
You either bring your shirt that you want him to make a copy of, [...]
