Cantonese Cuisine (Qiji)

Sep 24th, 2008 • Category: Food (Others)

Well, I did remember someone lamenting the locational demise of Zhenji, a Cantonese eatery close by 1912.
Here’s another one I enjoyed. It’s called Qiji, and it’s conveniently located right opposite the back gate to Nanjing Normal University. For those not in the know, this road is still called Hankou West Road, the road along which [...]

Big Meat Noodles

Today, my Nanjing friend Gaoyan took me out on a mid-autumn tour. No falling leaves of green and gold. Just the smog and noise of the busy city.
What sparked my imagination though was the street in front of Sofitel Hotel. A small rundown street called 大和街 [da4he2jie1].

The chinese words on the shop’s signboard read 詹园面馆 [...]

Harbin Shuijiao

Way better than Daniang Dumplings!

Harbin Dumplings (or 哈尔滨水饺) is a local dumpling spot frequented by the laowai and the locals alike. Dumplings of all varieties can be had here for 2 to 3 kuai per liang (两, equal to 6 dumplings of one flavor). You can have your dumplings with hot soup, a cold beer, [...]

Daniang Dumplings (大娘水饺) - loosely translated as “grand aunt’s dumplings” (haha) - is a chain store selling dumplings.
While not fantastic, it’s worth a try…

This place in right where Fashion Lady (the underground mall) is.
What to order? Check what the family next orders. It’s just different kinds of dumplings, really.

People’s Chicken Soup

This is a local favorite. the words read “民间老鸡面馆” in simplified script, which translates to “people’s old chicken soup noodle shop.”

Huiwei

Jan 15th, 2008 • Category: Food (Nanda/Nanshida Area)

Huiwei (回味) sort of means “return to flavor.” Huiwei is everywhere. It just so happens that Ninghai Road houses one.

Especially if you want to try duck’s blood in your soup. It’s a local eatery where you can try stuff that local often eat. The prices are cheap. I don’t like blood, so I go [...]

Lin’s Fish

Jan 15th, 2008 • Category: Food (Nanda/Nanshida Area)

This shop is located on Ninghai Road just next to the Ninghai Road police station 派出所 [pai4chu4suo3].

What do they do best? Fish. Loads of locals come here. There’s the first floor and second floor, recommended that you stay on the first. The second floor is kinda stuffy.

The dish above goes with beer. You must order [...]

Guotie

What’s guotie (锅贴)?

Don’t mind the messy look of the shop. It’s an art.

Zhenji (Cantonese)

Nov 26th, 2007 • Category: Food (Others)

The restaurant is called 珍记 [zhen1ji4].
Once again, a place that you’d never find on your own. Here’s one: Guangdong food to your liking.
If you haven’t been here yet, check it out before it gets too crowded. The boss below is quite a character, but wait till you meet his most hardworking waitress (see below [...]
