Foreign Language Books

Mar 15th, 2008 • Category: buying things

For those who are looking for foreign language books, this is the official (by name) place to go.

This is a picture of the second floor, where there are books (in chinese) to aid those who want to learn a foreign language using mandarin. Can life get any tougher than this?…

Xinhua@Zhongshan East Rd

Mar 14th, 2008 • Category: buying things

As mentioned by Scott in one of the comments,
At the Foreign Language bookstore it’s a lot of mainstream stuff. At the Xinhua bookstore, go to the second floor and look for the shelves in one corner that are labeled “English Source” materials. There’s an okay selection, though the books are very expensive, just as at [...]

Buying stuff at Metro

Sep 8th, 2007 • Category: buying things

Metro 麦德龙 [mai4de2long2] is the best place to get all sorts of imported stuff, BUT there are two things to note concerning this place:
1. It’s far away from the center of the city.
2.  You can only shop here IF you are a member.
If you’re price sensitive, then it might be good to check out the [...]

Carrefour

Carrefour = 家乐福 [jia1le4fu2]
Carrefour has a new location! Since early 2006, people have started flocking to the Carrefour on Zhongshan East Road 中山东路 [zhong1shan1dong1lu4]. It’s right next to the newly-built National Library, and under a square where people come to do taichi and other exercises at dawn and at night.
What a place to be!

Yes, [...]

Convenience Stores?

Nov 26th, 2006 • Category: buying things

A convenience store is called 便利店 [bian4li4dian4] in Mandarin.
Below is Nanjing’s most ubiquituous convenience store. Everyone knows Suguo 苏果 [su1guo3]. SGBL stands for 苏果便利 [su1guo3bian4li4].

There are many other convenience stores around Nanjing, but for starters, just know that there’s the convenience store and there’s the SUPERSTORE. For example, Suguo has several large Suguo Superstores 苏果超市 [...]

Kiosks

Mar 12th, 2006 • Category: buying things

Below is a photo of a magazine kiosk. The people in there sell magazines, newspapers, maps and even phone calls. Some will also sell you e.g. 17968 phone cards, not for the usual 25kuai but maybe for 30 kuai.

Some people, like the lady below, can’t afford to rent a kiosk. As I walked past, it [...]

Central Mall Brands

Feb 2nd, 2006 • Category: buying things

I read somewhere that Central Mall was one of the first malls at Xinjiekou.

It is interesting to check out the latest at Central Mall, which has since remade itself with the inclusion of hip brands.
Quoting Mary Schnack, “What is a brand? A brand is a name that stands for something in the mind of the [...]

Dayang Shopping Mall

Feb 2nd, 2006 • Category: buying things

Dayang 大洋百货 [da4yang2bai3huo4] has a different feel if compared against the other shopping centers across Zhongshan South Road 中山南路 [zhong1shan1nan2lu4].
Check it out for yourself. Apart from a spa in the upper reaches and nice things to shop for on all floors, there is a food court down in the basement, and that’s my topic for [...]
