Bebbi’s

Feb 18th, 2009 • Category: Food (Others)

I went the wrong way out of the Xinjekou subway the other day and wound up beneath the Orient Dept. Store. There I found Bebbi’s, which I had never seen or heard of before. So I had lunch.
Their website (www.bebbis.com) will tell you that Bebi’s is a restuarant in Switzerland that now has [...]

Cantonese Cuisine (Qiji)

Sep 24th, 2008 • Category: Food (Others)

Well, I did remember someone lamenting the locational demise of Zhenji, a Cantonese eatery close by 1912.
Here’s another one I enjoyed. It’s called Qiji, and it’s conveniently located right opposite the back gate to Nanjing Normal University. For those not in the know, this road is still called Hankou West Road, the road along which [...]

Big Meat Noodles

Sep 15th, 2008 • Category: Food (Others)

Today, my Nanjing friend Gaoyan took me out on a mid-autumn tour. No falling leaves of green and gold. Just the smog and noise of the busy city.
What sparked my imagination though was the street in front of Sofitel Hotel. A small rundown street called 大和街 [da4he2jie1].

The chinese words on the shop’s signboard read 詹园面馆 [...]

Coffee Places

Jul 15th, 2008 • Category: Food (Others)

Grab a book, magazine, or mellower friend and go to a coffee shop for several hours. Nowadays, you can’t throw a rock in Nanjing without hitting somewhere to get a cup, but everyone of course has different tastes when it comes to where to go. Of course, there is always Starbucks, the spiritual parent of [...]

Review: Xinjiang Food

Jul 8th, 2008 • Category: Food (Others)

Xinjiang Muslim Restaurant on Chengxian Street, near Southeast University, in Nanjing, might never be the same again.
I’ll never forget the first meal I had there, that sweltering summer evening when I walked through those constantly swinging greasy glass doors with red Chinese inscription on them- “welcome-air conditioned inside”.
Once indoors, I was taken aback. The place [...]

Costa Coffee Lounge vs Starbucks?

Apr 25th, 2008 • Category: Food (Others)

A coffee place in 1912 that some people prefer to Starbucks. Really?

You’ll have the chance to check out both coffee places. Costa’s the one on the ground floor here.
And here’s the inside…

The staff tell me they are very different from Starbucks.

Christina Bakery

Classy-looking, and all over Nanjing, but any comments, people out there? I prefer the guy next door anytime.

Roseyard Bakery

Feb 28th, 2008 • Category: Food (Others)

This bakery is on Shigu Road (石鼓路).
It’s between Jack’s place and the massage place.
The cakes they sell are worth looking at, especially if you live in the Xinjiekou area and want to get a cake to celebrate someone’s birthday.

MY PLACE

Jan 29th, 2008 • Category: Food (Others)

This place is enclosed within the alleyways south of Hunan Road. The food can be categorized as fusion food - fusion between east and west. The decor is simple but comfortable. The boss does wine tastings paired up with organized golf excursions.

Address: 37-11# GaoYunLing Lane, Gu Lou district, Nanjing City (Behind the Phoenix Garden Hotel, [...]

Daniang Dumplings

Jan 15th, 2008 • Category: Food (Others)

Daniang Dumplings (大娘水饺) - loosely translated as “grand aunt’s dumplings” (haha) - is a chain store selling dumplings.
While not fantastic, it’s worth a try…

This place in right where Fashion Lady (the underground mall) is.
What to order? Check what the family next orders. It’s just different kinds of dumplings, really.
