I have to agree with anonymous’ take on the food at Jimmy’s. But then again, this is so true of most of the western-style eateries in NJ so what do you expect? I still eat there, but always take care to down few cold ones first. And if you don’t like the owner/staff, don’t go there, the rest of us will make our own judgment, PRIVATELY.
hmmm i dont know much bout jimmy, but from what i’ve seen of him the guy looks like a nice chap but the pizzas you get at jimmy’s are crappy.. the ketchup they use is not one bit nice, the pasta makes you wanna puke.. the only good thing at jimmy’s is the “onion ring”..
Jimmys is the best gay bar in nanjing, It’s safe to hang out and aproach people without fear of being discriminated againsed!!! Jimmy is not gay but more open minded and I thank him for that! Fabulous decoations and charming service! Hope to see you there sweety! X0X0
It’s pretty sad when people have to use the internet to try and damage one man’s reputation. The staff at Jimmy’s are friendly and attentive, the food is good if you’re in the need for a quick Western fix, the beer is great (Jimmy’s had the best draft beer in Nanjing IMO - it just tastes fresh and not stale).
I guess some haters just can’t stand to see a man do well for himself while they are stuck teaching folks how to say ‘apple’ in English.
Jimmys the number one gay friendly joint in Nanjing!!!
Need a smoke ask jimmy, he is the only place in town with hooker water pipes to smoke your goods in the place you buy em.
after reading the previous accusations about jimmy’s bar i am slightly disgusted and disappointed about the narrow mindedness of the people who read and write this blog..
I have been friends with jimmy and i am in an honorable position to say that he is my brother in Nanjing. after 7 years of growing in Nanjing together i consider him as being one of the most open minded and generous people iv ever known..
i think if you have a problem with him have the balls to to go and confront him with your problems, and if your too scared to do that then come and talk to me, Bernie, and I’ll tell you exactly what i think .xx

Hey Jimmy’s rules
The big fat hairy italian meat pizza is something to die for!
So get the F*%k off his case.
ps Limes can’t foos
Unfortunately, as the “Sad Commentary” writer has pointed out, some voters believe in Obama because he is “Harvard educated”, and “whose father is from Kenya”. We know W. Bush and Clintons are all from Yale, a school the same good as Harvard. So, “harvard educated” is not the reason they voted for Obama. Therefore, “whose father is from Kenya” may be the only reason made them vote for Obama. Again, voting, or (dis-voting the other party) because of candidate’s color or country of origin, is racism!! So, who do you call a racist?
It isn’t fine cuisine (try finding that in NJ). It doesn’t pretend to be. But tastes decent, it is American themed (and there is nothing wrong with that, especially when that is your intent), and this is a key one, I’ve never been sick after eating there, which I can’t say for many other fine establishments in NJ.
The drinks are honest…the Budweiser comes from a keg straight from Anheuser Busch Budweiser Wuhan Brewery, and the spirits are true to the label and not substituted with inferior swill (as is VERY common in other establishments). No extra water here.
They do show American football on TV, which is pretty cool if you are a fan of that, because you don’t see it many other places. They also show soccer (OMG, I’ve exposed myself as an American! Curses!) until I want to scream, but hey some of the other patrons enjoy it, and mama taught me to share. Props and much love to all you kickball fans out there.
The staff rocks…Leroy, Cindy (Xin), FengFeng (spelled it wrong, I’m sure) are very nice. So are the others too numerous (Jimmy, you do need to consider labor costs my friend) to mention. Oh, and Dingo. My, my, my…you’ve got to see him to believe him.
Oh, and the bathrooms. THE ABSOLUTE BEST BATHROOMS IN CHINA!!! PERHAPS THE WORLD! I WENT TO THE BATHROOM A BOY AAANNNDDD RETURNED A MAN!
So, decent food, decent drinks, nice staff…beats staying home blogging!!!
I did have one bad experience…about a year ago, he had these narrow little stand-up tables, and I flipped my pizza right on to my Armani (a suit wearing American..Burn Him!!!). Cost me a fortune (about 6 RMB) to get it cleaned. Soured me, and I didn’t go back for a long time. They didn’t miss me. From the pictures on the wall, they had a lot of fun while I sulked. But they did get rid of the narrow tables, so all is well now.
Finally, I have to say the owners are nice people…and I often don’t agree with many things they say. But I would defend with my life his right to say it (plagiarized, not sure from whom, but it sounds cool).
Jimmy cracked corn, and I don’t care, Jimmy cracked corn, and I don’t care…
Oh, and I resent that Tony Soprano comment…I’m trying to be Dennis Leary! Pay attention!
No more personal attacks on this column. If you don’t like Jimmy the man starting 20th of November 2008, go tell him yourself.
If you have a useful comment about food/ambience - read “USEFUL” - then please go on writing. Readers will appreciate you.
If you wanna comment on racism or what not, please go ahead.
It makes constructive sense to recommend another place you like if you don’t like this. Has anyone of you eaten anywhere else? : )
If you have other places to recommend, most people will applaud you. Otherwise, it’s really sad to be eating or NOT eating at the same place, day in day out.
Thanks for the nudge, JJ, whoever you are.
out.

“honkey or whitey”????, come on, I much prefer “cracker”
I just couldn’t let this one slide. He supports the non-half-black candidate and therefore hates blacks? Nice non-sequitor fucktard.
Although I did hear Jimmy used to run a “free pitcher for an aborted black fetus” promotion back in the day. Free refill if it was blind or died in an alley.
yes, the word is ‘white trash’. http://www.theroot.com/id/47264
it sad this place has become so american when american are the foreign minority here in nj. go to castle and you’re how true that is.
All this talk about racism and the word “nigger” I haven’t heard the word “honkey or whitey” yet…i found most of the comments quite amusing especially the one by Jimmy himself, definitely just got straight to the point and then advertised the specials for the week!!! LOL now that’s marketing.
PS: Free shot of Tequila - Cuervo or Patron?
I went to Jimmy’s the other night and he had his staff wearing McCain/Palin t-shirts that he had brought back from the States with him. This was of course after that Obama won the election.
Jimmy is a cool guy and his meat hill pizza is the shiznit, but yeah he is racist. He still has that policy where he won’t pour drinks for black people, right? At least he sticks to his guns I guess…
I just got back from Missouri helping with the Obama campaign. The last 8 years the conservatives had the White House and we know the results in Iraq, Katrina and the worldwide economy. That era is now over because the majority of Americans decided to evaluate a person by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.
Racism and other prejudices led to the Nanjing Massacre, the Holocaust, Rwanda and so many more tragedies of the human condition. Sadly it is never just the racist that causes emotional or physical injury, it is also those who stand idly by in passive support: watching, laughing, cajoling. I do not accept hateful comments from friends nor family nor strangers. Though Jimmy will never get my business, the irony of it all is that, in all likelihood, the world economy including the local economy will likely improve over the next few years because of the Harvard educated President elect of the USA whose father is from Kenya: a man named Barack Obama.
PS Your comment about Canada is somewhat amusing since there are very few, if any, countries which are better educated with better health indicators nor a better standard of living than “liberal” Canada.
I would like it if you stoped calling me a rasist some of my close friends and customers are black! Come into my bar and say it to my face and you’ll be a man outherwise your just a baby crying because I have the best food in nanjing. So stop the ranting unless its about the food.
PS: Buy a burrito this week 16th November to the 22nd of november and recieve a FREE shot of tequila if you mention this comment.
Jimmy!
What does Jimmy and Micheal Jackson have in common??? You tell me!
It’s amazing how so many ‘people’ can drag themselves out of the woodwork to come running to Jimmy’s defence and even more amazing how a few bad reviews of a place can bring out so much defensive emotions and lead to heated discussions about racism from all sides. Still, I guess it’s all good for business eh? Or rather not. If you like Jimmy’s place, feel free to hang out there- if you don’t then spend your hard earned cash elsewhere. It’s not like there isn’t many more places in town to go.
Me, I don’t go because I didn’t like the place on the 2 times that I did go. The ‘meat feast’ sandwich was good, but the pizza was just awful. I’ve never met Jimmy and so have no opinion on him - it’s just his restaurant in not my kinda place. That’s MY choice and if you don’t like it…, well, like I really give a damn what You think.
Alright, so he says nigger every once in a while. Who cares? The grub is awesome and he has a decent selection of reasonably priced drinks.
So what - Jimmy says the ‘n’ word lot, and doesn’t like black people, well guess what - neither do his customers! I commend Jimmy for not subscribing to PC bullshit and I’ll happily give him my money; the service and staff are good.
Before you diss us white guys for not liking black people (who are far more racist IMO), then look at what Chinese think of colored folk and get back to me. Jimmy actually listens to his customers and if you don’t like that, then go back to your ‘liberal’ PC moose-humping CanaDUH.
Some of you know my as Gao Yan. I am a Chinese. I have been to Jimmy’s Pizza more often than I should have. (sorry jimmy) I am always treated nicely at Jimmy’s. Jimmy’s place is cozy and energetic. I have made a quite of few friends there. Jimmy can be sarcastic, he can be moody, he may have yelled at his employees like every other boss, he may have exchanged couple racial jokes like we all do, but there is No way, out of any way, him being a racist. (Click here to learn more about racism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism.)
Matter of fact, Jimmy is one of the few cock-Asians (aka Caucasians, that’s my racial joke.) in Nanjing who speaks fluent Chinese. (hmmm…could it be that Jimmy deliberately studied Chinese so well that he can hate Chinese in a more skillful manner? ) fact 2: Jimmy is one of the few who really have the guts to open up a business in China. (hmmmm, So…, could it be that Jimmy hate Chinese so much that he decided to open up a pizza place so he can hate Chinese in a more convenient location? ) Please, people, use some common sense and be your own judge, come to Jimmy’s and be supportive. Jimmy is the only and the last place of its own type.
PS: Jimmy doesn’t smoke. I think “Stoned” to him means being hit by a rock, literally.
Wait, now we can’t call a guy who freely uses the word n***** a racist because it’s getting too personal? WTF? I’ve also heard him use it and seen him hurl abuse at his staff too. I believe it can be the place to go for homesick Americans, as long as they’re redneck fratboys with more money than sense - the prices are just silly.
However it’s all no problem for me as all the following have better pizza:
Ciao Italia
Bella Napoli
Swede & Kraut
Pappa Johns
Jimmy’s is more on a par with Pizza Hut.
If you want to listen to 70’s rock music or watch American football go to Jimmy’s he’s obviously a fanatic about both. If from the south (USA) or feel comfortable what that, Jimmy is also a good bloke to hang out with. His drinks are well priced, but every single food item on the menu is overpriced and can be had better at other locations (IE: Papa Johns, Burger King, Tacos, Subway)
Jimmy talks freely about whatever is on his mind, some things he has said could be easily thought of as racist but I don’t think he’s much more of a racist than your average Chinese / White / Black guy.
Football + Drinks = Jimmy for the rest go somewhere else
Give it a rest.
Now your just being far too personal.
You sound like the asshole my friend!
So you don’t like the guy or the place.
Don’t go there then. You won’t be missed.
But no need to try and slander the place just cause it ain’t your cup of tea.
There are plenty of shit bars and restaurants in this town that I’m sure you’ll be more at home in.
Jesus H. Christ
The guy openly and frequently uses the word “nigger” in front of patrons. Surely someone like that would himself admit to being racist. The one time I went I heard him ranting about “fucking N**** this and fucking N****** that”. Will definitely not be back after that.
Also saw how he treats his Chinese staff in the place. Screaming obscenities at them and really going over the top for something rather mundane– like leaving a door open. I won’t say that that necessarily makes him “racist” towards Chinese people, but it certainly makes him an asshole, and I try not to give my money to assholes.
I don’t know if the bar intentionally keeps Chinese people out (I really doubt that’s the case– business is business), but I don’t see how native Chinese would feel at all welcome there from my experience. The bar was filled with white American frat boys and/or old white American men watching American football slapping each others’ backs and doing their damnedest to (seemingly) impersonate Tony Soprano.
Jimmy deserves at leat 2 or even 3 Michelin stars for his pizza making ability,
His Pizza is the shiz nit
After the horrific events of 1939, Nanjing got its mojo back when Jimmy opened he joint
Pappa Johns knell and pay homage!!!!
If he marries a Chinese woman? Jimmy sometimes has some bad personality, despite that, there is no way he is a racist. However, some of his patrons always show caucasian superiority (spell check) to Chinese at Jimmy’s place, and I guess, to flatter his patrons, Jimmy has to be that way as well. In short, it is not Jimmy, but his customers are racists.
What has always impressed me about Jimmy’s, is unlike any other bar or restaurant in Nanjing Jimmy’s and Jimmy him self are “real”
It’s a genuine American pizzeria,
One thing anyone can do in china is open an “expat” bar and restaurant, 99% of the time the below business model applies
Name: Waltzing Matildas
Theme: Australian bar, (usually with nothing but a few Bathurst and old Bundaberg posters left over from their previously owned bar in Australia)
Music: Pilipino band
You get my drift,
Jimmy’s is real,
Its and great place to meet new people in town, and has a great atmosphere for those who are not overly sensitive,
I recommend it if your American and missing home
Umm…Okay, the posts refer to the establishment discriminating against ethnic Chinese patrons, not black, white, purple or green Aussies, Englishmen, Bulgarians or Guatemalans. So the fact that you’re a “black Englishman” who doesn’t feel discriminated against is hardly relevant. But as you guys are the experts, my friends and I probably were just overly sensitive and just unfamiliar with the stellar customer service methods of the hung over “expat” (and I use that term verrryyy loosely) staff who “helped” us with our issues.
Though as this conversation has long passed the point of being anything remotely resembling constructive, I will not waste any more of my time and agree to disagree on what entails racism and leave this thread.
In the future I will leave all my personal experiences and opinions out of the “comments” section of a “discussion” website, as it appears that the concept of rational thought, open discussion and objectiveness is not something served to Jimmy’s patrons.
Oh, you did make one good point, if you have issues with this sort of behavior, don’t go. I don’t
Have a great time in China.
Rascist, rude and lazy…….probably the funniest thing I’ve read in years.
I am a black Englishman. I have been drinking in Jimmy’s for about four months now and I have never experienced any of the above. Jimmy is a great bloke to chat with and is always a witty conversationist. I find it rude and, to be honest, complete crap to say that either Jimmy or his staff are anything but hard working and very polite. In fact the only retards around here are people who slag others off like this.
I feel completely at home at Jimmy’s and recommend the place to anyone who likes to have a great time out in Nanjing.
Get a grip people! If you have issues with the place then go somewhere else. I don’t and I won’t!!
Jimmy’s pizza restaurant raises the bar when it comes to western cuisine in china,
Perfect Pizza , Bloody good burgers, and friendly out going staff
If your looking for a good time and a laugh with friends on a Friday or Saturday night, Head to jimmy’s,
Overly politically correct self loathing weirdo’s do your self a favor and please stay home!!!!
Can you clarify your points, as it sounds to me that you’re saying:
1. Those who call someone who acts in the way the previous poster described as racist are also racists who don’t respect Chinese.
2. Those same people should “chill out” and have a sense of humor about these types of remarks as interpreting them as racist is “petty”
3. Those who see him as racist (and thus are racists themselves according to point #1 above) should look at themselves and determine why it is in fact they who are racists.
Just wondering if I understood correctly as I wasn’t quite sure. I’ve never actually spent any time in Jimmy’s as I’ve only had it a few times and was always take out or delivery, but I wasn’t terribly impressed, it was just “alright” in my book, but maybe it’s the dine-in atmosphere that’s so great. Oh and, don’t worry, the fate of a pizza shop operator will in no way affect my ego, so please speak freely.
Funny how we all hide behind anonymous posts to bash the ones we love. This city is obviously not big enough for all those egos to be out in the open. You know the pizza is good, ya know you’ve been there many times and ya know you’ll go back. Go on then, hide behind the web with your insults and go back to Jimmy’s with a sly smile on your hypocritical two faced mug. Racist? Wow, funny how your probably one of the ones who comes to China and has youir daily whine and complaint about the Chinese. Referring to “them” of “they all”. Grouping and categorizing an entire race of people because you can’t have chicken without the head and feet, or your bread without sugar, or you cry because “they” just can’t understand your superior FOREIGN ways. RACIST? Pretty strong words don’t ya think. Take a good long look at yourself next time you walk outside and just can’t seem to understand why things just aren’t as you think they should be.
Chill out! Perhaps you should just try to have a sense of humor and stop being so damn petty.
Oh how we love to bitch when we are sad and pathetic.
hehehe, not sure if I would have worded it the same
but I have heard many experiences similar to yours, and honestly the pizza isn’t good enough to put up with that level of ignorance, maybe someday one of those shanghai or beijing outfits will come and open a proper pizzaria…
Despite providing good, pizza, Jimmy’s is the best place in Nanjing if you want to be treated to the most racist management in Nanjing. If Jimmy is drunk, hungover, or stoned enough to mutter something somewhat coherent, he will openly tell you about his blatant preference for the white race.
The pizza and other food and beverage items are quite lovely though!
We just ordered pizza from this place tonight. It was delicious, by far the best pizza we’ve had in China, lots of sauce that actually had flavor (no taste of ketchup at all!). Also, it came in like 25 minutes Definitely recommended.
does jimmy’s have nfl games on regularly… or is it just superbowl!?!
the nfl season has started and i have one sad husband at home, dying to catch a game or two.
the place seems only for foreigners~~
Place kind of blows, staff is very near to being mentally handicapped, crust is too dense and dry.
Papa Johns is about the best I’ve found in Nanjing (go for the thin crust and hold the duck and scallops).
Still have to try the pizza at Ciao Italia and Bella Napoli.
it’s not “Superbowl Patriot”. it’s Superbowl Giants now….hahaha!
yes, 730am in this side of the world.
just so I’m clear, that will be 2/4, 7:30 AM Nanjing time ?
