Get a MAP magazine.
It’s a publication of foreigners or wealthy Chinese. Any place that’s expensive will have them.
I don’t know of any specific coaching classes in English, if that’s what you’re looking for. If you’re Chinese is up to par and somehow you want to perversely study for an english exam in Chinese, then I’m sure there are plenty of buxibans that provide training. Try asking Longre Training Center- 13851789921.
I took it this fall in Nanjing (essay) and Urumqi while traveling (verbal and quantitative) and just got a review book from the Foreign Language Bookstore and that helped considerably.
Good luck!

night life. check out blue marlin, castle and scarlet for starters. all the folks here know that. meet people there and they’ll tell you more about. all the best.
Shanghai.
i would appreciate a lot if anyone could let me know where would be the best place for a fun night out with good music? clubs, pubs, gigs are all taking into account .
hi every one….
is there any graduate record examination {GRE}…..coaching centre in nanjing????……
zhujianglu
everything electronic market district- (PC/Mp3-5/Phones/Cameras)- a building named huahai has just about everything, across the street is TACOS — not all the food here is good the spicey beef pizza is crap, but the tacos here are nice! The tacos come with a side of fried potatoes scalaps and fries that are better than anything else…
xinjiejkou
the main shopping district— from the big golden building named “golden eagle” you can see pizza hut and starbucks. most of these markets are way too expensive (2000 for a shirt/trousers) however, nearby you can get reasonable prices– KFC, Mcdonalds not far away
towards hanzhongmen from xinjiekou
this is really near the golden eagle-xinjiekou area. first cross the road from golden eagle to pizza hut. you have to do this under the road, after you come up head from xinjiejkou to hangzhongmen– a couple minutes later you will see an escalator going down into a mall. there is a Subway, Dairy Queen and Papa Johns here.
shuiyocheng
another mall mostly just clothes here with a Starbucks and “Tacos”, but a short walk up the road leads to ‘the Confucian temple’ and — BURGER KING!! hell yeah!!!!!!
for those living close enough to wutaishan i.e. the nanda nanshida people, or the working crowd near zhujiang road, there’s a deal at wutaishan fitness center. untill the end of november only price has dropped from 4200 to 3600 a year. it’s got everything!!!
heard the pool is not so clean, so i haven’t used it. the shower area is okay by chinese standards. but it has all the pumping equipment, different kinds of classes from cycling to bodypump to yoga to taichi, and also the running mills.
compared to sheraton and crown and ctf prices, it’s a deal!
for the guy with camera repair issues, most people will head to zhujiang road and buynow. but try out where the locals go. it’s even more local than zhujiang road.
camera city is on longpan road. tell the cabby zhaoxiangji cheng (照相机城) and 龙蟠路. go check out at least two store before believing you got a good deal.
Does anyone know of a place in Nanjing that I’d be able to have my digital camera repaired? Thanks…
ok, i know ctf, nairobi, wutaishan, the crown and sheraton. what others to consider? ramada? what is your recommendation?

Actually I know about Salsa Cantina. It’s not bad, but I guess for me that’s just like any other normal place that tries to provide a western sytle breakfast. The bigger hotels always have this option but its so weird going to a hotel to eat breakfast. It’s ok, for now, I guess buying the necessary and cooking it myself will do for the time being. Thanks for the head’s up tho.
i’m sure others will have a better take on this, but six months ago, there was breakfast at salsa cantina. some people will say that they serve good stuff. yes, they were the only non-hotel place i knew of serving american or continental-type breakfast - albeit on the skimp.
then there’s the burger corner on shanghai road (the highest point on that precipice-like wall). perhaps they will wager a breakfast on you.
you can get stuff at decathlon (迪卡侬). it’s where all the big stores are, including IKEA and B&Q and METRO.
The following is from the card from the megastore………………..
Address: No. 286 Ningli Road (opposite metro)
Tel: 025-5240-1018
Opening Hours: 9am-9pm
How to get there: see the comments at metro. Otherwise, just tell the taxi the above address. Or tell the person the chinese name for metro (mai4de2long2).
yes..its still a good time to bargin some winterware before real winter, around Shan Xi Lu…the Shan Xi Lu Department Store or Hu Nan Lu Department Store or around Xin Jie kou,the 7th floor of Da Yang Department store…..Good Luck!

Hi - Just curious if anyone knows of any places in Nanjing that serve western style breakfast. I’m from the states and haven’t had IHOP or Denny’s in a long time. Just curious if there is anything like that in Nanjing. If so, please post some options. Thanks.
apart from these backpaker stores, where can we get winterwear? good quality ones, not like those we get at walmart or carefour.
there’s a place called 天和 (tian1 he2) on 进香河路 (jinxianghe road). This shop is at the corner of zhujiang road and jinxianghe road, but on jinxianghe road.
where is jinxianghe road? look at the horrible map i’ve drawn here: http://www.nanjingnow.com/582/shopping-for-electronics-zhujiang-road/
you’ll see a horrible black line crossing horizontally. jinxianghe road is that yellow line sticking upwards from the the zhujiang road black line.
jinxianghe road is also known for having many backpacker stores.
zhi1 yin1 (Music Friends) is shop you can find in xinjiekou. this one’s recommended by my friend. he says you walk over from hongwu road toward Walmart.
and it’s somewhere along the way. details, i don’t know… ; )
anyone else know a little more about music stores here?
Hi,I need some help.I just moved into a new house but I am not very happy with the door.I was wondering where I could get locks and those metal sheets which Chinese use to enforce their doors.
The price would also be highly appreciated.
P.S It’s urgent.
Thanks y’all.
Hi!
I’m in nanjing since 29th August and I just found one music/instruments store at Hanzhong Road. I’ll stay until 1st November but some of my friends will leave earlier and i’ll ask them to take some goods to Portugal.
I’m looking for guitar effects pedals (Boss and Line6) which I didn’t found on that shop that i mentioned.
Can anyone help me?
Answers to my e-mail please… jorgemvm@gmail.com
thanks!
wanna go to macau or hainandao this october. any recommendations on who to buy tickets from?
Hey everyone,
I am the latest staffer on this site, and you can check out my reviews on local nightlife under “JR on the Scene.”
So far, I have reviewed Mazzo, A8, Blue Marlin (though probably not posted yet) and am working on others. Check them out and tell me what you think, and hooray for shameless self promotion!
summer in nanjing is never easy for the foreigner.
it’s hot. you perspire. and you wonder where all your friends have gone to.
but hang in there. many have survived, and even flourished during summers. summer is a good time to meet more local people. speak more of the chinese language if you haven’t been doing so.
and if really lonely, go to blue marlin or some foreigner’s watering hole. there is salvation still.
You were a big help! Enjoy the summer
Eve
Well, I sent my many parcels home by 2 means:
1. China Post
2. Book shop in university.
It costs approximately 950 RMB to send 20 kilos to Ireland. But Ireland is exceptionally expensive as by air.
Bring all post to china Post opened as workers check contents first. But then they pack for you.
Hope that helps you.
Denise
Hello! Our adventure is soon finished in Nanjing and we have stuff to ship back to Canada. Do you know a good supplier that ships by boat (and that you can trust)? Or is China Post the best? Thank you so much! Eve
bikes get stolen all the time. sometimes they reappear at the second-hand shops. check out tang2zi3jie1 which is like 3 parallel streets south of the sheraton-kingleys hotel.
here you scout of bikes, remember that you want to get a bike that looks old but works well.
Besides Castle…
Scarlets, but only late for the most part, like after 1 on the weekends. Tuesday nights’s also around 12 or so, and then going until the wee hours.
Seen some at Planta a bit earlier in the evenings as well.
NanDa foreign students especially seem to like Behind the Wall, but never been a huge fan myself.
hey, where do the majority of young westerers hang out in nanjing?? there are lots of uni students, so where do they go? even castle bar doesn’t get that many. please help me out!
where can i get a second hand bike? how do i choose one so i does’t get stolen?? thanks
I’m looking for good quality/organic meat, fruit, veg etc.I’m particularly looking for lamb, beef and chicken. I have sourced some good pork but I’m having difficulty with the rest. I know some foreigners in Beijing get together to buy an organic cow/lamb and divide it between them.Is there anything like that here?Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

for those like natalia looking for volunteer work,
try pfrang. http://www.pfrang-association.org
there’s amity international too. http://www.amityfoundation.org/wordpress/?cat=15
Decided on the Sheraton, was alright, but nothing too great. May try the Sofitel next holiday…
ice skating near fuzimiao.
there’s a sports complex there - include badminton courts, ice skating, and other what nots.
ice skating costs 30rmb/hour. you can buy a 320rmb card for 20hours worth.
have you tried jin’s cafe in the jinling hotel? that’s one. or the ramada?
on the other hand, you can get sandwiches when attending the NICF church function on sunday.
Anyone know where the best place to go for Easter Brunch is? I’ve had the dinner buffet at the Sheraton and was really impressed, so I am leaning towards that, but also considering Sofitel.
Thanks
That big Xinhua bookstore mentioned in the previous comment actually has a better selection of new English-language books, though. At the Foreign Language bookstore it’s a lot of mainstream stuff. At the Xinhua bookstore, go to the second floor and look for the shelves in one corner that are labeled “English Source” materials. There’s an okay selection, though the books are very expensive, just as at the Foreign Language bookstore, and the selection seems to change every time I visit.

go to the foreign languages bookstore.
it’s on zhongshan east road.
how to get there:
a. if you’re at the xinjiekou intersection, find zhongshan east road - you’ll have deji plaza on your left and xinbai shopping center on your right.
b. keep walking eastward.
c. you’ll pass popular bookstore on your right
d. you’ll pass xinhua bookstore on your right (this is not the one yet)
e. you’ll cross another intersection using a huge intersection bridge.
f. keep walking and before the next intersection, onyour right, is the foreign languages bookstore.
A newcomer wonders, can anyone tell me where to look for books, magazines, or newspapers in English?
check out http://www.ea-spring.com if your intrested in going to a hot spring close by. best in winter. there are a couple of shops all in same area, but heard this is good.
entry is 128 yuan can take taxi there for about 70-80yuan
can call their customer no. 13655199782 to find out.
Pete:
Thank you! Its NICF ( Nanjing International Christian Fellowship). I have been a regular attendee of the church myself, are you member yourself also?
if you wanna join a church service that’s in english, i know a place.
they meet every sunday morning from 930am to 1130am. quite a nice crowd. it’s a protestant church and most of the people are the international crowd.
just tell the cabby to drop you at PICC Insurance Building. this is on changjiang road (close by 1912). There will be signs there once you arrive to give you further directions or you can follow other people up the elevator (where else will they go on a sunday morning??? )
there’s also a catholic church near on shigu road but i don’t know the details.
