Swede & Kraut
Sep 9th, 2006 under Food (Nanda/Nanshida Area)

As suggested by the name, the food here is German and authentically so!
Of course, there will be the standard Italian fare. Good food that you’ll find at every Nanjing Oktoberfest!
How to find this place:
Click on the map here. On the map, look for Nanxiu Village 南秀村 [nan2xiu4cun1]. This is the name of a road, a small sloping road. Can you see a red star on the map? Nanxiu Village is the street on the left of the star. See it?
If you are walking along Shanghai Road, in the direction from Guangzhou Road toward Hankou West Road, you’ll make a right into this lane. You’ll see this on your right…

And you’ll see Behind the Wall on your left…
Walk up the sloping road, and keep walking along. Swede & Kraut Restaurant will be on your left side.
I’ve been here 3 times and they missed the mark on all 3 occassions. First time, we had a group of 10 and the time difference between the first person being served and the last person served was pushing 35 minutes. We might as well have split up. I just finished dinner there tonight (feb 2, 2010 Tuesday) and wish I hadn’t. Only 3 of us this time and our order took 45-60minutes. It was around 8:45pm by the time we were served, so it wasn’t like the place was packed. To top it off, I ordered the German “meatloaf” special and it was basically a brick of Spam…disgusting. In the description, it specifically stated that it wasn’t “minced meat” so I figured this was a good sign; little did I know that it would be far worse. Dissappointed, I finished the mashed potatoes and sauerkraut and stuck my steak knife in the spam brick. The waitress didn’t ask how it was or even if there was something wrong that caused me to eat merely a corner of the brick. Apparently the same owners own Skyways bakery. The company I work for offers their sandwiches and I’ve ordered their lunch about every other day for a year and a half. Last week, there was literally a 5inch long black hair baked into my wheat roll. To have missed something like that when wrapping a sandwich in transparent Saran wrap is just plain sloppy. Bottom line: not sure what has happened to swede & kraut and Skyways bakery recently, but at it’s current state, I would recommend spending your money and appetite elsewhere.
I love the german sasauge!
