Around NJUTCM
Jan 29th, 2006 under Study

NJUTCM lies on Hanzhong Road 汉中路 [han4zhong1lu4] at the intersection with Huju Road 虎踞路 [hu2ju1lu4].This is also the Hanzhong Gate 汉中门 [han4zhong1men2] intersection. Across the road from the university campus is the Hanzhong Gate Square, a park that has formed around the old city wall gate. Next by the square is Kentucky Fried Chicken a.k.a. KFC 肯德基 [ken3de2ji1].
Photocopy Shops:
Before we get started, it may be helpful to know where to make cheap photocopies of whatever you need replicas of. In addition to the two photocopy places in the school itself, there are two other outside of the school compound:
1. Shop #1: Make a right upon exiting the school. Turn right and walk straight ahead until you reach the Hanzhong Gate Junction. If you make a right at the junction into the small road that runs alongside the Huju Road Highway, you’ll pass by a small photocopy shop on your left. It’s a cheap place to make photocopies.
2. Shop #2: Walk across from the school to Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). Once you’re on the KFC side of the road, walk towards the Xinjiekou Junction. You will cross a small lane after passing KFC on your right. Cross the lane and you’ll see a row of shops in a gated enclosure. The photocopy shop looks like this:

Acquainting yourself with Hanzhong Road:
Now, let’s get started.
If you come out of the school and walk left toward Xinjiekou, you’ll pass by a Long Distance Bus Station on your left…

and soon see Suguo (where you can get your groceries) and Sheraton-Kingsley Hotel on your right. This hotel is a great place for foreigners to find out more about foreign life in Nanjing. There’s also an ATM machine here that is linked to PLUS and CIRRUS networks, which is useful if you want to draw money from a bank in your home country.
Crossing the road, you’ll pass by China Telecom on your left. This is where you go to get internet installed in your home, or to pay for telephone bills.
Upon crossing Pailou Alley, you’ll find a China Mobile shop on your left. This is where you can top up the credit in your mobile phone’s SIM card). Not far ahead, also on your left, is Bank of China.
Keep going straight and you’ll pass by a humongous hospital (amongst the many you see on Hanzhong Road) on your right. This is Shenzhong Hospital, a TCM hospital that also incorporates Western pharmaceuticals and technology.
Keep walking straight and you’ll pass by a medical bookstore on your left. In it are many books on TCM, including a couple of shelves housing books in languages other than Chinese…

Keep walking straight, and you’ll hit Xinjiekou.
There’s more to life around NJUTCM, but hopefully this brief introduction gives you a better sense of where you are.
When you feel more comfortable with the area, try strolling the Qinhuai River or checking out the Hanzhong Gate Square duing the evenings.
