When you first chance upon Xinjiekou 新街口 [xin1jie1kou3], all you’ll see are many different shopping centers cluttered together. Xinjiekou is a useful place to get acquainted with, whether or not you’re into shopping. We’ll try to get you acquainted with certain landmarks in this area. Once you know these places, it’ll be much easier getting to know the rest. Look at the map below and learn about these shopping landmarks…

    oopth -re English map of city: my Xinhua Bookstore directions not perfect : cnr Hongwu Lu and EAST Zhongshan Lu … the crossroads feature a huge pedestrian overbridge which gives access to every corner. You may find a different English map at one of the other Bookstores along East Zhongshan Lu, but the version at Xinhua is superior, in my humble. Rod

    There are also English maps in the Sheraton Hotel’s gift shop. When I got one last September, they were only 5 RMB. I imagine all of the other 5 star hotels in Nanjing have English maps, as well. And keep an eye out for the small City Map that’s available free in a lot of places that foreigners frequent. It’s mostly advertisements, but it has a small English map that’ll work if you can’t find anything else.

    For the first week here I went crazy trying to source a superb city map in English. Aha! Xinhua Bookshop, cnr Hongwu Lu & Zhongshan Lu. Chinese maps displayed but English ones hidden in a huge bottom drawer not far from the Info Counter. Buy both, as the Chinese map marks every bus number, letting you easily plan your journeys. RMB8 per map. Rod.
