Carrefour

Dec 28th, 2006 under buying things

Carrefour = 家乐福 [jia1le4fu2]

Carrefour has a new location! Since early 2006, people have started flocking to the Carrefour on Zhongshan East Road 中山东路 [zhong1shan1dong1lu4]. It’s right next to the newly-built National Library, and under a square where people come to do taichi and other exercises at dawn and at night.

What a place to be!

Yes, it looks the same as most other hypermarts, but I found at that you can buy Thyme and Italian Spice here without having to travel to Metro. These things I couldn’t find even at the imported foods section at Walmart (at time of writing i.e. late 2006)…

At the lowest level, there are other non-Carrefour shops to look at, selling everything from winter clothing to dolls for winter clothing…

So, do you know where to get good hooks that will stay on no matter how heavy your winter coat hangs?

Or go back to Xinjiekou area?

  1. Of the Carrefour near the National Library. I advise all customers to get out their reading glasses and check the sell-by dates on the bacon - and indeed other meat products. Last month, being from a country where valid sell-by dates in supermarkets are taken as read, I bought some bacon, cooked it, and found it was very definitely off. The packet gave a sell by date of some 6 weeks previous. I have checked the bacon on several occasions since - and they are all way out of date. So glad the Chinese government is bringing strict new food laws in. They might start with Carrefour.

  2. carrefour is just next to the nanjing national library. it’s on zhongshan east road which is some ways from the north-south subway line. the east-west line travels under zhongshan east road, but is still under construction. so subway’s out.

    loads of buses e.g. #18, #9 traverse zhongshan east road. what bus you take depends on where you are.

    if you live west of xinjiekou, then another more convenient alternative woud be walmart, which is in convenient xinjiekou.

  3. Can you get to Carrefour using the metro or bus?

  4. Hello,
