Coffee Places
Grab a book, magazine, or mellower friend and go to a coffee shop for several hours. Nowadays, you can’t throw a rock in Nanjing without hitting somewhere to get a cup, but everyone of course has different tastes when it comes to where to go. Of course, there is always Starbucks, the spiritual parent of all lesser coffee places. Two Starbucks locations immediately come to mind: one in the Grand Ocean in Xinjiekou and the other at the southern end of 1912. Like any Starbucks, these have wireless internet, muffins of all varieties, frappuccinos, and collectable mugs. Prove to your friends that the world is indeed flat by showing them an authentic Nanjing Starbucks cup!
There is a staggering variety of other places to go if you don’t feel like paying Starbucks prices, too. There’s Lane Coffee, on Bird Flu Alley. There is Enjoy Coffee on Jinyin Jie, across from Xiyuan, the Nanjing University foreign student’s dorm. In the same general area, there is the New Magazine Café on the corner of Hankou Lu, quite close to the main gate of Nanjing University. Around the corner, there is Soul Mate, a French owned coffee shop which serves some of the best food and coffee around. As always, there is the seemingly irreplaceable Skyways if you want to get some very good cake.
