Also, is the boss a French guy? he’s not the friendliest type.
Contrary to previous posts, I’ve always liked Soul Mate a lot. Probably the best burger in Nanjing, and food is reasonably priced. I had the milkshake once, but don’t recall it being anything unusual for China.
One of my favorite Western restaurants, if not THE favorite.
sorry to hear bad experience from the last post. maybe it was an off-day? I’ve only had good experiences there. It’s friendly, down to earth, great food, and *great* music playslist.
Assuming you ordered in English, I’m willing to bet the milkshake mistake was a language issue. On top of English probably being the second language of the waittress (i’ve only seen chinese waittresses there), “milkshake” has a very loose definition across the anglophone world. I know in the US alone, milkshake means different things depending where you are.
In some places it means milk with a flavored syrup. In others it means ice cream, syrup and milk blended together into a smooth frozen drink. However, this beverage is also called a “frappe”, or a “cabinet” (new england), especially in places where “milkshake” does not imply ice cream. And in other places, it means ice cream dropped in flavored milk, like a “float” as it is known elsewhere.
So did you she bring you the wrong order, or did you place the wrong order? There’s no way of knowing what the mistake really was, but in a case like this it could’ve been anything, not ruling out general laziness or lack or attentive listening.
Give it another try!
Ordered a milkshake, waitress gave me a glass of Nesquick. Always lists “Leffe” on the menu but never has it in stock. Maitre’ d/restaurant manager is incredibly rude, unkind, and unprofessional. Meat in burger was awful.
Avoid like the plague.
The restaurant is back since august the 23 !
soulmate owners have gone home for the summer, but who know when they’ll come back and open shop again?

Soul Mate Cafe.
The staff is always the same, and always great. As well, they have the best good cheese burger and french fry deal in town - 25 RMB i think for the set, and you can add a big bottle of tsing tao for just 8 RMB - a great way to fill up the belly. The Royal Salad is always very tasty and everyone who’s tried the pasta dishes has enjoyed them. You really can’t beat it as a quiet place to go with two or three friends and have a meal with a drink. The location is also very laid back and the building itself, along with the overall atmosphere, really has a unique quality. Not to mention the music they play - no rotation of the same album over and over again, a wide range of the owner’s great taste in tunes. The only thing that stops me from fully recommending this place to everyone is that I want to make sure I have a seat when I show up to get something to eat.
